Speaker 1:

You're listening to the Daddy Daughter Bookworms sponsored by CareFresh Training Group, where we talk about children's books. Hello, bookworms. My name is Lucy.

Speaker 2:

I'm Alex and today we're going to learn about hammocks in the jungle.

Speaker 1:

Well, that's good, because today we're reviewing Havoc in the hammock.

Speaker 2:

Awesome, and who wrote it?

Speaker 1:

The author is Kelly Russell-Jaw.

Speaker 2:

And tell us a little bit more about the book.

Speaker 1:

The illustrators are Liz and Kate Pope, and it's published by Raycraft Books in New York, new York.

Speaker 2:

And what's the genre of the book?

Speaker 1:

It's a children's picture book.

Speaker 2:

And why don't you tell the listeners how we found out about this book?

Speaker 1:

The author's husband knows you from karate.

Speaker 2:

Yes, he's our sensei, isn't he?

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

And sensei Jim is amazing and I posted something and he's like my wife is a writer, she has a book, so we decided to do this book and it seems like it's a pretty cool book, so we're going to put it on the podcast, right?

Speaker 1:

And if you go to Satori Academy, please tell us. Thank you.

Speaker 2:

When you look at the front cover, the name of the book is Havoc in the hammock. What do you think Havoc means? I have no clue. Well, that's one of your new words that you're going to have to figure out. Hopefully, we can figure out by the end of the podcast. Yep, what or who was the main character in the book?

Speaker 1:

The turtle is the main character.

Speaker 2:

Does the turtle have a name?

Speaker 1:

No, it doesn't really say the name.

Speaker 2:

He's just turtle Yep. So, lucy, why don't you give the listeners a little bit of a summary of this crazy book?

Speaker 1:

All the turtle wants is rest. There are a bunch of bugs and animals causing all these crazy things to happen. Finally, at the end, the turtle finds a quiet place to rest. Then something even crazier happens.

Speaker 2:

Can you tell me?

Speaker 1:

It'll split at the ending.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so then I don't want to know.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you have to read the book.

Speaker 2:

You gotta read the book.

Speaker 1:

Read the book later, after field talking.

Speaker 2:

Okay. So, Lucy, some of the synonyms for havoc are damaged, chaos and mayhem. Now that you hear those words, does havoc make more sense in the description?

Speaker 1:

Yes, more animals kept coming and coming and coming. They were annoying the turtle.

Speaker 2:

It's kind of like during Christmas when you're opening up your presents, right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and you don't let me go downstairs right away.

Speaker 2:

I know I'm so mean. The main thing is that this poor turtle is just wanting a little bit of a rest and everybody wants to annoy him. It's kind of like mommy when we kind of annoy her, don't you think? A?

Speaker 1:

little.

Speaker 2:

I know that's kind of silly, so why don't you tell us about the illustrations and the pictures in the book?

Speaker 1:

I love the colors of the drawings. I particularly like, I particularly like, I particularly like the bunnies, the flowers and the squirrels.

Speaker 2:

What do bunnies make? What sound. And what do squirrels make? Same sound, huh.

Speaker 1:

I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 2:

What do flowers make? They don't make sense. But yeah, the pictures are really great in this and I've said this in other episodes. You know the drawings of these illustrations. Like I'm just looking at it, it's not like an Oliver Jeffers book, yep, but it's more like a very hungry caterpillar book, Don't you think?

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

And I think the illustrator did a great job of making it very kid-friendly. Like the centerfold has the turtle with the grasshoppers and he's in the lake and the turtle is getting annoyed because all he wants to do is just Sleep. Yeah, get some peace and quiet, Kind of like mommy huh.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and sometimes me.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, because what do we say when you start annoying mommy? What do you don't want to do?

Speaker 1:

Don't poke the bear If you say that in your house. Comment down below, Please.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we say don't poke the bear, because we don't want to poke any bears here.

Speaker 1:

Not me, not you, not mommy.

Speaker 2:

Not me, not you, not mommy. All right, so let's get back to it. So the turtle's problem was he needed rest. Was his problem ever solved?

Speaker 1:

The problem is not solved by the end of the book.

Speaker 2:

He doesn't get his rest huh.

Speaker 1:

Nope.

Speaker 2:

All right. Would you recommend this book?

Speaker 1:

I think kids from three to five years old would like this book, even if they're a little too young to read it to themselves.

Speaker 2:

You think this would be a good book to have it read to you.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you could just read it to yourself. I think it's kind of like a Christmas carol. It's not a Christmas carol, but it's like a Christmas carol. The rhythm's like a Christmas carol.

Speaker 2:

So the words kind of go in a rhythm. Yes, you're learning a lot about that in music class, huh?

Speaker 1:

Yes, quarter notes and quarter rests.

Speaker 2:

So it's kind of neat how both books and music kind of work hand in hand.

Speaker 1:

Yep.

Speaker 2:

Do you get to play an instrument this year?

Speaker 1:

I think that's an extra. If I don't, then I don't.

Speaker 2:

Okay, talked about who would recommend. Is there anything else you want to say about this book that you liked or didn't like?

Speaker 1:

Well, this is just a comment about the book. It's not spoiling the ending, though.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

At the end, but like not at the very, very end.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

At first I thought the turtle was gonna go under the thing. Oh yeah, I'm not telling.

Speaker 2:

What the thing is.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, because I want them to read the book.

Speaker 2:

Of course, is that it.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

You thought the turtle would go under the thing.

Speaker 1:

The. Thing.

Speaker 2:

Not the thing in the other book that we reviewed in a different episode. So, folks, this is a really great book for a bunch of reasons. I love the fact that it has so many different types of animals and insects. It really kind of brings the outdoors in in a fun way. I love the way the illustrations are kind of, you know, childish, yeah, whimsical, yeah, awesome. I mean, it does have a lot of the hungry caterpillar feel to it, doesn't it?

Speaker 1:

Yep.

Speaker 2:

So, Lucy, why don't you tell the listeners how they can buy this book if they want to get it?

Speaker 1:

They can buy. They can buy the book at their local children's bookstore or they can go to our show notes, where we have a link. You can also help our podcast by giving it a five-star review.

Speaker 2:

And that would really be helpful. We just we just started getting our Amazon going, so in the show notes there'll be an Amazon link right to it and hopefully we can get. We're gonna try to shoot for ten listeners to buy the book. What do you think, lucy?

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

All right. Why don't you tell people how to get in touch with us?

Speaker 1:

To submit your theories and feedback. You can email us at daddybookwormscom.

Speaker 2:

We also have an Instagram which is Daddy Daughter Bookworms, and our Twitter is ddbookworms.

Speaker 1:

And don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel which is Daddy, Daughter, Bookworms.

Speaker 2:

That is awesome, and we actually have our new website up and running and that is daddydaughterbookwormscom, so you can go there and get all the latest episodes. You can actually give us voicemail feedback as well as join our mailing list, if you know, when we decide that we're gonna start doing newsletters or we're gonna start doing blog posts for all the episodes. So there's a whole bunch of stuff coming down and this book, along with a bunch of the other books that we've received from the authors, we're gonna be doing some kind of giveaway at the end of the season. We're still not sure what it is, but it's gonna be involving you, the listeners, and hopefully you'll want to not only get this book but the other books that we have accrued during this season. So, lucy, what are you gonna do this weekend?

Speaker 1:

We're gonna go camping and in a cabin.

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

And I'm hoping to go to the Halloween events this year, because we went in the summer. Me and my mom went in the summer last year. Yeah, and this is the first time for you.

Speaker 2:

It is the first time for me Going to Yogi Bear. We're going to the Yogi Bear Lodge and it's gonna be so much fun and we're gonna play hooky right from school.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but just to pack. Don't tell anybody, yeah, don't tell anybody, Please.

Speaker 2:

I'm really looking forward to that and hopefully we'll have a great adventure story for that as well, as maybe we'll do some reading, because we have all those books from those book fairs right.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

We're gonna be meeting, I believe, Andy Griffins from 13 Story Treehouse.

Speaker 1:

And he has a new book.

Speaker 2:

He's gonna have a new book that's gonna be out. I can't stress enough to you. There is a whole bunch of independent writers out there that are busting their butt making books like this, and whether you have little ones or big ones or you're looking for a gift, this would be a great one to give somebody, just because the fact is, you know these writers, they do it for Because they love to write, just like Lucy loves to read, and it supports a family or a labor of love, and, darn it, the book just looks awesome. That's our show. Thanks for listening everybody. My name is Alex.

Speaker 1:

And I'm Lucy and see you soon, bookworms.
